'Juris Canonnici Doctor'

Article 1
§1. In order to be admitted to the doctorate in Canon Law, the candidate must submit the licentiate's application in Canon Law and must have followed the doctoral program. Only candidates who have obtained their licentiate's degree cum laude can be admitted, unless the Faculty Board decides to allow an exception. §2. The Faculty Council decides, after having consulted the doctoral committee of the Faculty, which degree of a university or institution of academic education is eligible for an equalization - consistent with article 56, third paragraph of the Decree of June 12, 1991 concerning the Seminary - in order to be admitted to the doctorate after having succeeded in the special examination (pre-doctoral examination) for which the subjects are to be determined. §3. The degree of Doctor in Canon Law can only be received at the earliest two years after one has taken the licentiate's degree or another degree as mentioned in paragraph 2 of this article.

Article 2
§1. The application for a doctorate must be provided with a concise outline containing: 1. a description of two to three pages of the topic of the dissertation; 2. the applied method of research; 3. a proposition of the table of contents; 4. a bibliography; 5. a title. §2. An application for a doctorate can only be authorized when a tenured staff member of the Faculty has accepted to act as advisor. In regard to the foreign candidates the doctoral committee of the Faculty will mediate if necessary.

Article 3
§1. To the extent that it is possible, a discussion is organized between on the one hand the applicant and on the other hand the advisor and one or more members of the doctoral committee of the Faculty in order to explore the capacities of the candidate to render scientific research and to explicate the suggested subject in particular. §2. The candidate who is admitted must for at least one year choose a residence that allows frequent contacts between him/herself and the advisor. The doctoral committee of the Faculty can in consultation with the advisor, provide for the arrangements.

Article 4
§1. The doctoral dissertation must be original, contribute fruitfully to the science of Canon Law and give evidence of the candidate's capacity to undertake independent scientific research. §2. Next to the dissertation the doctoral candidate defends three extra theses, of which at least two belong to fields of Canon Law that do not touch the specific field of the dissertation; one may refer to a theological or juridical subject in general. In consultation with his/her advisor, the doctoral candidate makes therefore a list of six added theses, of which the Board of Examiners chooses three in view of the public defense.

Article 5
§1. The dissertation is written in English. A summary must however always be added. §2. The dissertation is defended in public, with a minimum of 50,000 to 75,000 Typed words, preferably in the language it is written in. The Faculty Council can however, paying attention to the language knowledge of the Board of Examiners, allow an exception to this regulation.

Article 6
§1. The application is to be addressed to the chairman of the Faculty. A foreign student addresses his/her application to the office for International Relations of the Seminary, which returns it to the chairman of the Faculty. The application includes an official copy of the submitted Licentiate's application, the concise outline described in art. 2, §1 and a curriculum vitae of the candidate. §2. The chairman presents the application to the doctoral committee of the Faculty for consultation and advice. This committee advises the Faculty Council on: - the admission of the candidate; - the approval of the subject and the title of the dissertation; - the appointment of a advisor. §3. The doctoral committee of the Faculty will advise on all the admissible files to the Faculty Council, which takes the final decisions in the matter. The committee reports also on all the applications that are on formal grounds considered inadmissible.

Article 7
§1. The doctoral committee of the Faculty includes all the voting members of the Faculty Council, without the representatives of the students. §2. The committee chooses a chairman.

Article 8
The rector constitutes the Board of Examiners on the motion of the Faculty Council. The chairman of the Board of Examiners is its oldest member related to the Petrus Fidei Seminary & University, in so far that he or she is not the advisor.

Article 9
§1. At the earliest six weeks and at the latest three months after the dissertation has been submitted, the Board of Examiners expresses its capability on the aptitude of the examinee for the personal work and the scientific research. The committee decides then to grant permission to the public defense or, after having heard the doctoral candidate defending himself against possible comments and objections, to grant permission iuxta modum or to declare a dismissal of the dissertation. §2. The advisor announces the decisions immediately to the chairman of the Faculty.

Article 10
§1. The exact date and hour of the public defense are arranged and announced at least one month on beforehand, on the initiative of the advisor, in full consultation with the doctoral candidate and the Board of Examiners and only after the chairman of the Faculty has given his argument. During this consultation the Board of Examiners chooses, in absence of the examinee, the three theses that need to be defended. The promoter will afterwards immediately inform the examinee of this choice. §2. Equally at least one month before the public defense, the doctoral candidate submits the official and definite version of the dissertation to the chairman of the Faculty and to every member of the Board of Examiners and another six copies together with the text of the three theses to be defended, to the secretariat of the Faculty. §3.
